Transforming Your Property, Elevating Your Experience.

Steel City Historical Fencing is a unique and exciting martial arts school located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As seen in Season 2, Episode 8 of "Ed & Day in the 'Burgh" on Very Local, and featured in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, we are dedicated to providing a comprehensive introduction to Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA). Our mission is to help students become the best sword fighters they want to be, while promoting a sense of community and camaraderie among its members.

Our Story

HEMA is a revival of the ancient art of medieval swordfighting, using historical manuals preserved from previous centuries. Our school was founded on the principle of honoring God and our intentions, as well as the pursuit of martial excellence. We believe that it is essential to remember the historical context and martial purposes of the techniques taught, rather than just focusing on the physical movements.

Our Services

Our services include a variety of classes and training programs designed to accommodate students of all skill levels. From our introductory classes, where students can learn the basics of HEMA, to our advanced classes, where students can refine their skills and learn new techniques. We also offer special events and activities, such as social gatherings and tournaments, to foster a sense of community among our members.

Our Team

Our team of instructors and staff are dedicated professionals with years of experience in HEMA. Led by our head instructor and owner, Chris Hobbs, our team is committed to providing a safe, supportive, and educational environment for all students. We also have a dedicated operations manager and marketing team, as well as social media and event managers to keep our community engaged and informed.

Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to HEMA. We offer classes in various weapons, including the longsword, saber, rapier, and sword and buckler, as well as specialized classes in Sword and Buckler and Viking combat. Our classes combine theoretical knowledge of the historical manuals with practical training and sparring.

Our Community

At Steel City Historical Fencing, we believe that community is just as important as combat. We host regular social events, such as our Steel City Sword Social, which is a monthly gathering for students and instructors to socialize and engage in friendly tournaments. We also partner with local businesses and events to promote a sense of community and camaraderie within our school and the wider Pittsburgh community.
